EM® is the abbreviation for Effective Micro-Organisms.
EM® is a combination of useful regenerated micro-organisms that exist freely in nature and are not manipulated in any way.
This mixture, a composition of prof. Dr. Teruo Higa a Japanese scientist, increases the natural resistance of soil, plants, water, humans, and animals.
EM® considerably improves the quality and fertility of soil as well as the growth and quality of crops.<

The composition of EM®

EM® consists of many different kinds of effective, disease-suppressing micro-organisms. Each of these effective micro-organisms has a specific task. In addition, these micro-organisms enhance each other’s working. This means that synergy occurs!
The micro-organisms are naturally existing. They are not modified or manipulated in any way and are cultured according to a specific method. Some are known to produce bioactive substances such as vitamins, hormones, enzymes, antioxidants and antibiotics that can directly, or indirectly enhance plant growth and protection.
EM consists of the following five families of micro-organisms:
• Lactic acid bacteria
• Yeasts,
• Actinomycetes,
• Photosynthetic bacteria and
• Fungi
Effective Microorganisms, or EM® is one of the most popular microbial technologies being used worldwide now and EM® products have been on the market since 1983 in Japan. EM® comes in a liquid form and consists of naturally-occurring beneficial microorganisms.
Throughout the world, EM® applications are used:
• against odor
• in household
• for recycling kitchen waste
• for all kinds of pets
• for aquariums, swimming pools and fisheries
• for fruit and flower cultivation
• for agriculture, horticulture and livestock
• for environmental clean-up and health industries.
• in ornamental gardens and green management of cities.

 

The value and the ascendancy principle of EM®

The exceptional case of EM® is the combination of aerobe and anaerobe micro-organisms. Aerobe means “life with oxygen” and anaerobe means “life without oxygen”.
In science we always have considered that it was impossible for these two groups to coexist, because the circumstances in which they live are opposites. Naturally both groups coexist in the soil.
Before the discovery of EM® it was common to think that aerobe micro-organisms were the “good” guys and anaerobes, the “bad” guys. Nevertheless, in both groups exist disease causing and disease suppressing elements.
The aerobe and anaerobe micro-organisms have in common that they can change matter into anti-oxidants. These have a beneficial influence/effect on the health of the soil, plants, humans and animals.
There are different groups/strains in the world of micro-organisms. There is a small group of dominant ”effective” micro-organisms ++, and a small group of dominant “harmful” micro-organisms —-, and a large group of the so-called followers. In nature this group of followers works together with one of the above mentioned dominant groups.
In reality, they just join the most dominant group.
There is always a battle between the effective and the harmful organisms. The “billions of followers” just wait for the group that prevails. They adapt and imitate the ones that are victorious.
Currently ninety percent of the soil is controlled by the harmful micro-organisms. This is due to many factors, like: Harmful substances from industries, traffic and households.
Also, the industrial agriculture with monocultures, insufficient crop rotation, excessive use of chemicals and fertilizers, wrong tillage, too heavy material and bare soils ensure the growth of the number of harmful micro-organisms.
All this is unfavorable for the environment, the soil, the quality of the food and the health of humans and animals.
But if the good guys, the effective micro-organisms, prevail, they will have a constructive and disease suppressive influence in many areas such as:
• Soil, air and water.
• Plants and trees.
• Agriculture- and horticulture crops.
• Health of humans and animals.
A proper use of EM® in households, the environment, the agriculture and horticulture can promote the growth of effective micro-organisms.

 

The permanent activity of EM®

  • With current agriculture and environment techniques, it is often only done to suppress symptoms. It is better to tackle the effective causes. There are uncountable micro-organisms with strongly divergent activities in our environment. The aim of EM® is to stimulate and improve the activities of the effective micro-organisms so that the soil and environment can repair itself.
  • The recovery of the soil and the environment is possible through the exploit of the natural pace of matter. Through the use of “EM® Naturally Active”, a larger diversity of micro-organisms arises.
  • The Effective Micro-organisms are able to show their full strength by means of right / accurate applications. The nature and the condition of the soil and the environment hereby play an important role. Especially in the first year it is important to use EM® with the correct frequencies and the correct concentration. Once the new positive micro flora have established themselves and have stabilized, the beneficial effects will remain for a certain time.

How EM® works

EM are a life substance and do not work in the same manner as antibiotics or chemicals. EM® increase the population of the beneficial micro-organisms. For chemicals and pest management resources it is absolutely impossible to do this. The salt and acid influences of chemicals have a negative effect on the environment.

EM® does not kill. It is not an antibiotic, but just a mixture of life stimulating micro-organisms, known in a variety of food preparations such as; beer, wine, sauerkraut, etc. The advantage is that no new different strains with a greater resistance will develop.

EM® work gradually. Depending on the application, we can expect an effect between some hours (e.g.bad odors) and several years (e.g. soil fertility).

The effect of EM® is partly based on a combination of fermentative micro-organisms. The metabolic products, that arise at a fermentation are known as antioxidants, vitamins and enzymes.

EM® is not harmful, pathogenic, genetically-engineered/modified (GMO), nor chemically-synthesized. EM is neither a drug nor a fertilizer.

Dr. Teruo Higa & EM® Technology

Dr. Teruo Higa is recognized around the world as the originator of the “earth-saving revolution”, which stems from the introduction of Effective Microorganisms® – more popularly known as “EM®”. EM® Technology was developed by Professor Dr. Teruo Higa while he was a professor of horticulture at the College of Agriculture, University of the Ryukyus in Okinawa, Japan. Until he became ill from his use of chemicals before he turned 30, Dr. Higa was a advocate of conventional agriculture and worked on the development of synthetic agricultural products.
Having grown up in farming, he knew that farmers were quickly left at the mercy of the chemical companies that supplied them with ever-increasing expensive inputs. He decided to find a natural method through the use of beneficial micro-organisms that would help relieve the farmers of their chemical dependencies.
